The Jamaican Psychological Society (JPS) is a professional
association for psychologists in Jamaica. The JPS is committed to advancing
psychology as a discipline and profession. It spreads the message that
psychologists make a difference to peoples’ lives, through improving scientific
knowledge and community well-being.
JPS members form a dynamic group that advocate for psychologists
at all levels of government. They are constantly promoting the contributions
psychology makes to people's health and well-being, and to understanding
important social issues facing the Jamaican society.
The JPS is a critical link for members who work in a
diverse range of employment settings and specializations. It provides
essential professional support in areas ranging from ethical advice and
industrial relations to professional development and business marketing.
The JPS strives to promote quality psychological practice,
and foster learning and growth, by setting high standards
of professional education and conduct. Being a member of the JPS offers
significant prestige and professional recognition. Meanwhile, JPS marketing
and education campaigns inform the wider community of the benefits of
consulting an JPS Psychologist.
The major objectives of our society are:
- To promote the highest standards of ethics and conduct
among our members;
- To promote and protect the Public interest by establishing
and maintaining levels of academic achievements and standards of competence,
character and integrity for our members;
- To promote, foster and protect the interest and welfare
of Psychologists in Jamaica and elsewhere and to cultivate a positive
spirit of professional cooperation between our members;
- To seek the enactment of laws and the modification or
repeal of any Act or Statute in the interest of the general public and
Psychologists;
- To promote the increase of knowledge and efficiency among
Psychologists and to disseminate information of common interest to members
and the general public through discussion groups, seminars, lectures,
bulletins, journals, newsletters , conferences, and other media.
- To seek, establish, and maintain affiliations with other
Organizations of Psychologists, and Associations and Societies with
similar aims and objectives. To promote and foster the interchange of
information of common interest between local Psychologists and those
overseas, especially those with whom Jamaica shares common historical
and cultural heritage and to promote and to do all things conducive
to creating a healthy atmosphere of co-operation between fellow Psychologists
internationally;
- To promote research in Psychology and to aid Psychologists
in serving the people.
- To define mental health in consonance with modern established
Psychological concepts and standards appropriate to Jamaica, the region,
and other countries in a similar stage of economic development.
